One biblical narrative is attacked far more often than the others: the story of creation. I think the reason the Genesis account is attacked so vigorously is because the enemy knows that our cosmological beliefs impact the rest of our faith walk and journey. If we can’t trust that God made the world, what can we trust?
Creation establishes God’s identity before it establishes our identity. Genesis begins with God. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1, ESV). God is already there, and the biblical narrative begins with His agency.
But what happens to faith when God is no longer its foundation? If God is not the foundation of our faith, then we have no faith to speak of. When we remove God as Creator from our understanding of reality, we first lose our understanding of who God is, and then our understanding of who we are.
The Bible is ordered the way it is for a spiritual reason. Although Genesis doesn’t come first chronologically, it still serves as a starting point of our faith. First God, then everything else. Our existence depends on the eternality of God.
